Ruses and Refusals, Madison Bycroft, 2019. Film stills, courtesy of the artist.

Madison Bycroft

Portraying a series of characters who resist representation, Ruses and Refusals samples an array of images, language, and references from history, pop culture, mythology, cinema, and art history in an aesthetic of kaleidoscopic excess. The film gathers a motley crew of anti-heros: Buster Keaton, Julian of Norwich, the Greek figure of Thetis, the philosopher Diogenes, a blobfish, a fox and a beaver, a satyr, and a “very hungry lady”. Their techniques of resistance vary – some perform non-expression, while others withdraw, placing themselves in a future out of frame. Together they play with their own characterisation, loitering out of shot and refusing to stay still. With the kind support of the Bureau des arts plastiques of the French Institute and the French Ministry of Culture.

Heavy View, Laura Yuile, 2020. Photo: Tom Carter for TACO!, courtesy of the artist.

Laura Yuile

In her work Heavy View, Laura Yuile collects outdated and malfunctioning TVs and other electrical items, grouping them in constellations of overlapping pop-up windows similar to a computer desktop while pebble dashing their screens. This cheap architectural render is imbued with all the associations of suburbia, which the artist employs as both a 'white-noise' and an urban camouflage. Yuile’s intention is to make these salvaged objects disappear and to create an opportunity for them to exist as something else. Heavy View is a project that developed out of the artist´s consideration of technological and architectural obsolescence; the failed utopia of modernist social housing, and the rapid waste generated by unfashionable or unrepairable devices.

Wa anak Witu Watu work in progress 01

Natasha Tontey

In the Indonesian province of North Sulawesi, the stone-revering Minahasa were organised according to the gift economy of Mapalus, which was based on volunteerism, kinship with nature and mutual aid. According to native cosmology, the first person ever to exist was a woman who gave birth through a stone. With the presence of colonialists from the West and their interactions with the locals, the Minahasans evolved to a stone-based exchange system that was informed by a mixture of their ancient spiritual beliefs and the Christian-influenced capitalist ideas. The Epoch of Mapalucene explores the dynamics of Minahasa worldview through the perspective of digital culture, speculating on its potential for imagining an alternative society based on a reciprocity that brings together animate and inanimate realms. The work was commissioned by transmediale with the support of the Martin Roth Initiative.

Fenced within the silent cold walls, Bassam Al-Sabah, 2018. Film stills, courtesy of the artist.

Bassam Al-Sabah

Fenced within the silent cold walls features a recreation of the artist’s former home in Iraq, to which his family are unable to return. As the camera moves through the derelict house, digital images begin to escape from a forgotten TV and computer screens, and materialise into living forms. These forces surge out in utter destruction, invading the domestic realm. A voice introduces itself as Al-Sabah’s grandmother who describes the burning of sentimental objects in the home before fleeing, leaving everything behind but her photographs. Reflecting on this childhood memory as an adult, Al-Sabah weaves imagery pulled from cartoons with paintings of his family portraits, deconstructing the links between fantasy and reality, the hero and the everyday, and make-believe and fact. Madre Drone

2019-2020

Patricia Domínguez

Inspired by the spread of wildfires in Bolivia as well as social protests in Chile in 2019, Madre Drone questions technological state surveillance through a story of multi-species resistance. The installation merges myths, symbols, and rituals with ideas of extraction, cultural appropriation, and natural destruction due to industrialisation. Domínguez’s video and totemic sculptures take the fragments of a broken world and propose new configurations for living in a strange reality in which plants neutralise robotic energy, drones cry, and toucans have been blinded by fire. Beyond the destructive forces of colonialism and its legacy, Domínguez proposes a healing space where viewers might live, like plants, in the cracks of post-modernity.

Congress of Idling Persons, Film still, Bassem Saad, 2021

Basyma Saad

Congress of Idling Persons features five interlocutors who play themselves and greater fictions amid broader transhistorical narratives. In the shadows of recent world-historical events, artist and writer Bassem Saad, DJ and translator Rayyan Abdel Khalek, musical artist Sandy Chamoun, writer Islam Khatib, and organiser Mekdes Yilma examine a cartography of protest, crisis, humanitarian and mutual aid, migrant labour, and Palestinian outsider status. Punctuated by the late Arab Spring and the Black Lives Matter revolts of 2020, as well as by the Beirut port explosion, the film weaves through transhistorical constants, from collective rage to mutualism, propelled by the speech and acts of its performers. With this work, Saad asks: If a group action is a riot and not a revolution, then who films it? If four is a riot, is it also a congress? The work was commissioned by transmediale with the support of the Martin Roth-Initiative.

Atmo still1

Anne Duk Hee Jordan

Taking evolution and adaptation as her primary themes, Anne Duk Hee Jordan imagines visions of post-Anthropocene futures through strange lifeforms and mechanical breathing machines. Presented as a complex system, Atmospheres of Breathing explores fantastical ecological networks of animated immaterial beings, where even the most microscopic of elements are made visible. Her constructed organisms combine sculptural, biological, and technological elements, between the human and the nonhuman. Micro and macro video footage shows the cocoon of a monarch butterfly, a shame-faced crab, and an inflated sea cucumber as they become entwined in a ludic environment. The machines operate according to a 4-7-8 breathing pattern based on yogic pranayama – an ancient technique for meditative breathing.

Memory Dispute, Sung Tieu, 2017. © Sung Tieu, courtesy of the artist and Emalin, London.

Sung Tieu

Investigating shifting economies within the use of toxins in past and contemporary Asia, Memory Dispute captures a remote rainforest in central Vietnam, an area heavily attacked by napalm during the Vietnamese American war. Ghostly images of an ecosystem now irrevocably altered become a metaphorical study when contrasted with captions meticulously documenting the process of a skin whitening treatment prevalent in Asia. An acid fluid is applied onto the body to separate two skin layers, allowing the first layer of skin to be entirely peeled off. Mapping the disparate and converging lines between napalm and that of an acid skin peel, Tieu traces how rapid economic growth, communication, and cultural exchange alter subjecthood in contemporary Vietnam.

Workation Sofia Caesar 2019 Vídeo still

Sofia Caesar

Workation loops four self-portraits of the artist reclining while at work across four screens of increasing size: a smartphone, a laptop, and two LCD monitors. The screens rest on cushions and carpet, in a yellow space between office and beach. In the four videos Caesar holds a smartphone, where viewers can see the initial stock images Caesar retrieved from googling the contradictory term “workation”, showing “flexible” individuals subsumed by the productive forces of capitalism. Caesar is shown in a hammock, at the beach, in bed, and on an idyllic balcony, but rather than relaxing, she misuses these places of leisure as working sites, which also become “material” for her art. Workation presents an embodied critique of the demands for 24-hour availability, or “remote presence”, that modern technology enables - and instead meditates on collective exhaustion. Larry Achiampong

Relic 3 is part of Achiampong’s ongoing project – Relic Traveller: Phase 2 – a multi-disciplinary multi-site piece that builds on themes of lost testimony, fallen empire, and displacement by deconstructing the architectures of colonialism. The work considers the current socio-political climate, contrasting a rise of nationalism in the West and tensions around Brexit to the African Union’s passport programme, which aims to open borders across a unified Africa. The project imagines a future in which the West declines and the African Union becomes prosperous, harmonious, and responsible for shaping the planet’s future. Relic 3 picks up from Relic 2, detailing a migrant worker’s struggles as they try to live in a hostile, alien environment.

Not Gone With The Wind, Eli Cortiñas, 2020. Funded by Hauptstadtkulturfonds, courtesy the artist and Soy Capitan, Berlin.

Eli Cortiñas

In Not Gone With The Wind, Eli Cortiñas explores the politics of images and their impact. Made from a collage of found sequences taken from Hollywood cinema, television series, advertising, Ted Talks, and YouTube videos, the film critiques the reinforcement of toxic stereotypes and misleading historical narratives. In this era of fake news, Covid-fuelled conspiracy theories, and global political uprisings, Cortiñas rightly asks “who owns the narrative”? and suggests that to save the future, one might have to reassess the past. With her meticulous selection of moving image sequences and quotes, Cortiñas refers to the current regime of ideas, and reveals how fear and mass media’s complicity reinforces hegemonic policies. Rhea Storr & Phanuel Antwi, For the Record, 2021

Rhea Storr, Phanuel Antwi

Our archive is not the silent storage room of Truth or History or Reality or Anything Real, for that matter. The aesthetic and language of archive and refusal open realism’s grip on art. Refusal speaks as if its desires have already manifested themselves in the present. We discuss the radical imaginative as a means of orientation, for moving and positioning oneself elsewhere to create new centres, foci and spaces. For us who live the frequencies and fiction of empires and self-creation, the archive requires poesis and abstraction; for us archival refusal is an act of pressing our ears to the image peephole through to the somewhere score of the said and unsaid things of our everyday lives. Neighbouring London and Vancouver, we reinterpret each other’s practice and sense of place. For the Record is a diasporic archive which embraces this rich tone and texture of diasporic romance. The romance, for the record, is not a move away from the difficult complexity of living in diaspora; the diasporic romance that For the Record captures is the unseen, unvoiced, undoing tenderness of Black kinship. The project is part of the culture program related to Canada’s Guest of Honour presentation at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2020 and is supported by the Government of Canada / Embassy of Canada to Germany.

Rhea Storr, Here is the Imagination of the Black Radical

Rhea Storr

Afrofuturism is communicated via the Bahamian people through Junkanoo, a form of carnival in the Bahamas. Originally celebrated by those who were enslaved and given just Christmas Day and Boxing Day off, Junkanoo can be viewed as a form of resistance. We follow the ‘Shell Saxon Superstars’, a group of 1,500 people, as they come together in spectacular fashion to enact a politically motivated theme, asserting national pride or depicting other countries. We visit the shacks where the costumes are made to observe the craftsmanship and dedication required to win the parade and obtain ‘bragging rights’. Along with 16mm film images, a multi-layered soundtrack brings together samples and analogue sounds that include static and radio samples to obscure a seemingly obtainable message. Too often Sun Ra’s “Space is the Place” is co-opted to merely refer to space travel- bypassing its assertion of the power of Black culture. Actual space agency sounds - sounds which usually describe comets or space travel equipment like the Mars Rover- are juxtaposed with interviews with the Saxons. In so doing the work roots an Afrofuturist aesthetic with the Bahamian people.

Te Moana Meridian

연도 미상

Sam Tam Ham

Employing longitude and latitude to map the world has become the dominant technology of relating to the terrestrial sphere. Latitudinal measurements are taken from the poles as determined by Earth’s axis of rotation. Longitudinal measurements are taken from the Prime Meridian, a point not determined by physics, but by geopolitics. Te Moana Meridian revisits a proposal first put forward in 1884 to position the Prime Meridian away from any land-mass in order to diminish motives guided by national interest. The work takes the form of a planned United Nations General Assembly Resolution calling for the Prime Meridian to be relocated from Greenwich, England to its 180-degree antipodean coordinates deep in the open waters of Te Moana-nui-ā-Kiwa / the Pacific Ocean. Manifesting as an opera that is due to be performed at the UN General Assembly in 2022, transmediale presents the project in its opening stages through a printed manifesto and accompanying short-film. Te Moana Meridian is directed by Sam Tam Ham in collaboration with Holland Andrews, Mere Tokorahi Boynton, Cat Ruka, Vaimaila Urale, Clara Chon, and a 40-piece youth choir. The completed work is due to be presented at a later edition of transmediale.

Film still, notes for les sanglières, Elsa Brès

Elsa Brès

During the summer of 2020, pictures of a naked sunbather chasing a team of wild boars across a lakeside beach in Berlin spread rapidly online. With the sunbather’s laptop in its mouth, the hastily captured smartphone images helped reinforce the myth of the boar as a troublesome animal. A wild animal that refuses to stay in the wild. Exploring confrontation and the relations between human and non-human, Brès questions anthropocentric fictions of ‘Nature’ that make our existence within an interconnected ecology hard to recognise. Constructing a non-human world in which wild boars are the primary protagonists, this experimental fiction artwork uses quantitative ecology tools to help guide its script – including geospatial mapping systems and a team of algorithmically animated boars. Manipulating data points, Brès uses mapping as a tool to open up new prospects for alliances between human and non-human. Sitting somewhere between the real and virtual, the world she constructs helps us imagine alternate ways of seeing the world, confronting prevailing anthropocentric philosophies towards a speculation for a communism of the living. Manifesting as a mixed-media installation within the transmediale studio, notes for les sanglières takes the form of an artist exchange and performance piece. Traversing the borders between artistic production, research and exhibition, the work builds towards the production of Brès’ new film to be shown at a future edition of transmediale.

Film still, Indications of Guilt Part 1, Maud Craigie

Maud Craigie

Indications of Guilt, pt.1 examines the structures of American police interrogation and their relationship to fictional screen representations of law enforcement. The film asks what it means to be familiar with legal processes through television before experiencing them in real life. Craigie edits together interviews with detectives, false confession experts, footage from TV series, and police training videos, revealing the interplay between fact and fiction in detective work and the subjectivity that constructs ‘truth’. At the intersection of legal, bureaucratic, and scientific structures, interrogation is revealed as a form of worldbuilding where, by making a situation appear real, it can become real, leading to miscarriages of justice. Indications of Guilt, pt.1 is presented in an expanded form across the transmediale studio space and includes additional works by Craigie: It is Difficult to Insult a Guilty Person, Video, 7’49” and accompanying poster Interrogation Training Certificate, framed Click, Click, looped sound (all 2021)

p. staff’s vibrant, colour-coded video uses text from Heinrich von Kleist’s 19th-century play of the same name to present themes of persecution and punishment, meditating upon contemporary issues of gender, queer resistance, and the carceral state. With an unconventional narrative structure, staff’s video cuts together a narration of Kleist’s play with interviews, conversation, found footage, hand-painted animation, and song. In a series of fragmented ‘daytime’ sequences, a range of artists, writers, and performers reflect on contemporary queer and trans identities and their proximity to desire and violence. Intercut with flashes of the sun and sky, city streets and text, subjects include Sarah Schulman, Che Gossett, Macy Rodman, and Debra Soshoux. Each of these segments is punctuated by ‘night-time’ diversions, narrated by Johanna Hedva in the dual role of both narrator and Prince.

People Enjoy My Company explores the privatisation of Irish state telecommunications company Telecom Éireann, one of the most controversial episodes in recent Irish history. Prior to the company’s flotation on the stock market in 1999, the Irish public were promised a new form of ownership and more than half a million people (20 percent of the population) purchased shares based on the principle of it becoming a share-owning democracy. The film represents the perspectives and experiences of these soon-to-be-disappointed shareholders – after mismanagement and buyouts caused high losses and poor infrastructural investment – as shared in early online forums, chat rooms, and on social media. The artist’s extensive research sets the event against a pre-millennium backdrop of Y2K, the Celtic Tiger economic boom and emerging ideologies of technological emancipation. Things become heated between rival groups of dancers in the swirling Swinguerra, a play on words with the dance swingueira and the word guerra (war). The dancers are generally non-binary – an implicit commentary on the repression the current president of Brazil. The power of Swinguerra lies in its nuanced exploration of social injustice and systematic oppression. While the film and its cast are not declarative in their political stances, the performances and the narrative build a striking atmosphere of resilience and resistance. The film achieves its unique dynamism through Wagner and de Burca’s careful and direct collaboration with the performers at each stage of production. Their multi-layered and non-hierarchical consideration of perspectives welcomes expertise and input from all dancers and crew equally. What results is a merging of reality and fiction, the stage and the street. The filming itself is steady and focused, giving the movement of the dancers full and dedicated attention, enhancing the strength of their performances and personhood. Wagner and de Burca not only value the aesthetics of the dance forms they document but also underscore the social factors such as race, gender and economics by which the performers are ‘defined’ outside of the film.

Soot Breath // Corpus Infinitum is a film dedicated to tenderness. It reproduces a radical sensibility we learned from listening to the blues, from listening to skin, to heat, and from listening to echoes, to listening itself. We ask: Could tenderness dissolve total violence? Could tears displace total extraction? We reimagine the human and its subject formation, away from predatory desire and lethal abstraction, away from the mind and eyes and noble senses, away from extraction and its articulations as ethnography, border regimes, slavery, sexual abuse, trade, and mining. Instead we turn to skin, resonance, and tenderness as the raw material of our reimagined earthy sensibility. Remembering that to be tender is to soften like supple grass, to attend to is to care for, to serve. Serving, we know, is the opposite of slavery, just as violence might dissolve with care. The historical background for Bad People, Bad News is the story of the Victory Arch monument erected by Saddam Hussein in 1989. This consists of two triumphal arches, each formed by two 43-metre-long swords held by arms protruding from the ground. The arms and hands for the monument were made in Europe and are said to have been modelled on Hussein himself, who reportedly had many doubles. A copy of his fingerprint was stored in the safe of the London foundry responsible and caused a stir when Hussein was arrested and questions were raised about his identity. Starting with the history of the monument’s creation, the installation addresses the question of how the ideologies of dictatorships become part of the writing of history. It is situated in the context of addressing the propaganda machinery of the Islamic State terrorist militia and its brutal strategies of destroying archives and monuments, and the theft and sale of art and cultural assets, as well as media self-dramatisation at cultural sites such as Palmyra. In this essayistic film, the different contexts, stories and experiences are recounted and interwoven by three Kurdish women. They meet every year in a different presidential suite of a hotel to celebrate the death of the ex-president and dictator Saddam Hussein. The focus is on a box they always carry with them. It is an archive of drawings, texts and events that they created after Hussein’s death. From this collection they draw details and cues that set their stories in motion again and again. In this way, an overall narrative is formed about states, dictatorships, monuments, terror and questions about power and interpretive sovereignty, originality and forgery. The film resists the staging of media images by avoiding them altogether and negotiates the possibilities of memory itself as it tells a story about disappearance. The essayistic film installation was originally produced for the exhibition "Arbeit am Gedächtnis – Transforming Archives" at Akademie der Künste, Berlin and is still on view until 19 September. Salvatore Arancio

The film‘s title is a quote from the famous text by Argentinian writer Julio Cortázar, which appears intermittently in this video not only as a verbatim script but as a literary tribute to one of the most enigmatic creatures of Mexican wildlife: the axolotl. Translated from Nahuatl as an “animal of water,” the axolotl is an amphibian endemic to the ancient valley of Mexico’s lacustrine system, which today holds one of the most populous cities in the world, Mexico City. 360 km from Mexico City, Lake Pátzcuaro and its Purépecha heritage is home to another little known axolotl cousin species: the achoque. Discovered in 1984 by a herpetologist from the Museum of Natural History in New York, the achoque was about to become extinct as it served as food for local communities around the lake. It is, however, its alleged curative property based on its advanced capacity for cell regeneration that caught the attention of a community of nuns from the historic Dominican order in the town. becoming the main centre for the preservation and research of this species, the aquarium is a workshop for the preparation of a medicinal syrup that includes honey, herbs and cells of the animal itself that is sold as a treatment for muscle aches or respiratory problems. With special permission from the order, Arancio enters the private, most intimate spaces pertaining to the monastic life of the nuns and introduces us to their daily work serving the church and caring for the animal; the theatre for acts of worship, reverence and care. Inventing a poetic path through images created with Louis Daguerre's centuries-old photographic device, 16mm film cameras, pixelated video games consoles, early smartphones and contemporary computer interfaces, the work asks: what aspects of reality have these different technologies been designed to document? What phenomenon, either too slow or too fast to be recorded, has escaped their capture? Are there still dimensions of our experience on Earth that have never been visually documented, and for which photographic technologies are yet to be invented? An investigation of the explicit and unspoken ideologies encapsulated in technology, the video unfolds as a web of apparently unrelated stories, progressively revealing patterns of technologically determined political erasure.

Heads May Roll

연도 미상

Katerina Suvorova, Moldiyar Yergebekov

Filmed in Almaty, Kazakhstan, Heads May Roll is a conversation between filmmaker Katerina Suvorova and fellow activist and writer Moldiyar Yergebekov. Together the pair discuss subjects explored in Suvorova’s forthcoming feature films One Year Chronicles and Qyz Bolsyn (May It Be A Girl) and draw attention to the daily acts of defiance performed by citizens demanding social change in Kazakhstan. In her film One Year Chronicles, Suvorova traces a path from the murder of a young Kazakh Olympian to the subsequent 2019 civil rights movement, Oyan Qazaqstan (Wake up Kazakhstan). In Qyz Bolsyn (May It Be A Girl), she follows a diverse group of women from across Central Asia whose given names bluntly express their parent’s unfulfilled wishes for a boy while expressing their hopes for future male offspring. The film features women with traditional names, including Uldana (the soul of a boy), Ulkayda (where is the boy?) and Kyzdygoy (no more girls). Exploring the socio-political impact of these films in Kazakhstan, the pair highlight the ongoing political oppression, systemic gender discrimination and colonialism's continuing consequences in the ex-Soviet state. Heads May Roll was commissioned by transmediale 2021–22 and is supported by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, Kazakhstan. Russian translation by Duman Nursila.

Chloé Galibert-Laîné, Ben Evans James

There is a space that exists between the narrative an image tells and the sensory effects it has on us that surpass that story. This is a space the French philosopher Jacques Rancière defined as the spectacle of the image, a force that beckons us to submit to its will - to free fall into the image. Through a series of sculptural installations installed in the transmediale studio, Chloé Galibert-Laîné explores how the image constructs its spectacle in order to equip the spectator with new ways to resist and refuse its power. Treating the image as an artefact that’s been engineered by the filmmaker, Galibert-Laîné and Evans James place the image through a series of theoretical processes that seek to break it back down into its component parts. These processes ‘reverse-engineer’ the image to reveal its source of power, exposing the gaps in its construction that allow alternate readings and understandings to manifest (Zimmerman, 2019). This process of reverse engineering takes in four principles of material science, exploring how they might relate to the construction of the image: viscosity, abrasion, buoyancy and conductivity. Free Falls into the Image was commissioned for transmediale 2021–22. With thanks for additional curatorial support from Rebecca Smith. The concept is inspired by the research and writing of Patricia R. Zimmerman, professor of Screen Studies in the Roy H. Park School of Communications at Ithaca College, Ithaca, New York, USA. Alaa Mansour

In The Mad Man’s Laughter, Alaa Mansour questions the politics of the circulation of images to engage with the simulacra of the so-called ‘war on terror’ and the ubiquitous surveillance it has since spawned. Exploring the fictitious entities at play in the military-entertainment complex, the film embarks on a journey across artefacts and rules shaped by modalities of power and control. Operating with a form of speculative archaeology, Mansour brings together archival material from US military footage, found media, computer-generated imagery, sounds, and texts. Navigating violences both visible and latent, The Mad Man’s Laughter critiques colonial-militaristic image production and the data that feeds algorithmic biases. Commissioned and produced by Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary for stage in collaboration with Ashkal Alwan.

Stine Deja Dawn Chorus Vestjyllands Kunstpavillon 2021 Photos Jacob Friis Holm Nielsen 2

Stine Deja

In Dawn Chorus: Beta, Stine Deja’s newborn avatars sit in a circle, singing in chorus, celebrating their rebirth. Part machine, part human, part everyday commodity, the avatars conjure up one possibility of life after the cryogenic freezing. (A practice where human bodies are preserved at -196 degrees celcius after clinical death, in the hope that they may be brought back to life if/when science catches up.) As an exercise in speculative thinking, the installation explores the hope that resurrection may one day be possible – a hypothesis into which 400 cryogenically frozen people have already bought into. A meditation on the afterlife as a commodity and progress as faith, Deja questions the morality and ethics of resurrection and reproduction technologies, and the techno-solutionist fantasies of immortality. The single-channel video (Dawn Chorus, 2021, 3’01’’) has been commissioned by the Goethe-Instituts East Asia for the media art project Hybrid by Nature. Further support provided by the Danish Arts Council.

The Underground Division Queering Damage 2018 2020 installation Luca Giradini CC NC SA 4 0 2

The Underground Division

Queering Damage is a methodology (sort of) for engaging with the damages that patriarchocolonial technosciences, turbo-capitalism, and totalitarian informatics have inflicted on living and other modes of existence. Extending queer sensibilities concerned with individual and collective injury, the manual sets out to name, formulate and partially repair various types of intersecting damages, if possible and desired. Through fictional mathematics and practices of resistance, The Underground Division considers how damages might be understood differently. For the exhibition, the methodological operations of the manual are dispersed between the artworks, making space to formulate a queering damage analytics towards possible partial reparations of the damages presented... or not. The Underground Division invited transmediale to apply and interpret the methodology for abandon all hope ye who enter here. Find the full manual here.

Lo-Def Film Factory

The Subterranean Imprint Archive is a research project that envisions a counter-archive of technopolitics and nuclearity on the African continent. It examines Africa’s role in the development of the first atomic bombs through the Shinkolobwe mine in the former Belgian Congo, the source of the uranium used for its development. Together with Congolese researcher Joe-Yves Salankang Sa-Ngol, Lo-Def Film Factory engaged with central and southern African archives to unearth contested histories of mineral extraction, uneven distribution, and e-waste. The work brings together first-hand testimonials, lectures, and found audio to build a multi-vocal portrait of the relationship between a historical moment, its actors and locations, and the present. The work was produced during the What Stays – Archiving Care residency, a year-long project in cooperation with transmediale festival, the JUNGE AKADEMIE of the Academy of Arts, and the Goethe-Institut Slovakia. In partnership with the Goethe-Institut South Africa.

Cihad Caner Wie Kan Zijn Noodlot Dwingen film still Cihad Caner

Cihad Caner

What is in a name? What is the legacy of the moorkop, a chocolate-glazed choux pastry whose name is a racial slur? Drawing attention to the construction and persistence of societal and ethnic divisions (hidden in names and elsewhere), Cihad Caner brings to life a ghostly apparition of the Dutch dessert, who recites lines from Shakespeare’s Othello in old Dutch. The pastry’s name was first deployed in the Middle Ages to name indigenous Amazigh and now designates people of North African descent as Europe’s “Other”. The pastry protagonist speaks and sings about stereotypes while reflecting on debates in Dutch media about its own name change to chocoladebal. The video challenges and calls on viewers to think about the prejudices of representation and the meaning of a name. This project was made possible with the support of CBK Rotterdam, PTGui and Mondriaan Fonds.

Entanglement by Annex Ireland at Venice 2021 Details 4

Annex

Exploring the materiality of data and the sets of relations that shape how we live, Entanglement probes how our desires, as expressed through our data consumption, territorialise and heat the physical landscape. Standing at the centre of the exhibition, the sculpture reimagines the data centre as a bonfire, reflecting on this infrastructure’s role in organising social relations and generating heat. Made up of real-time thermographic imaging and server racks, the work generates AI texts and soundscapes from a quarry in Valentia Island, Ireland, where the first transatlantic cable was pulled ashore in 1857. Drawing attention to the material footprint of internet searches and cloud services, Entanglement brings to the fore the thermal forces and sounds of extraction linked to data. Entanglement is an initiative of Culture Ireland in partnership with the Arts Council, Ireland, and represented Ireland in the Venice Biennale 2021. The work is supported by the European Union as part of the Artsformation Project. Further support is provided by Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg.

Remaining Threads 3 D Textile 1 Title 1

Ibiye Camp

The beating of Kalabari drums summon goddesses, gods, and spiritual beings amid the chatter of the streets of Buguma, Nigeria, and the swaying of Injiri cloths. Remaining Threads questions how traditional beliefs, cultural heritage, embodied knowledge, and spirituality are mediated and altered by technology and the ruse of progress. In recent years, Injiri textiles worn in Kalabari ceremonies have been produced by machines in China, replacing the handmade processes traditionally carried out by craftswomen. Reflecting on these shifts and their implications for women’s creative practice, social roles, technologies, and aesthetics, Ibiye Camp asks what is at stake in processes of automation and what traces of social and spiritual values remain?

Constant Dullaart

With high financial ambitions and associations with libertarian ideology, new blockchains have become the forefront of the commodification of digital art. Caught between contradictory aspirations as both currencies and speculative assets, cryptocurrencies are desirable for the purposes of financial fraud, the deregulation of money, price manipulation, and as high-risk investments. Exploring the frictions between a non-fungible token – something that can not be “funged” (changed) – on a so-called immutable blockchain, Unlock considers these limits of NFTs as a medium not only as a form of reference to a cultural gesture. Reclaiming the scammy environment of speculative blockchain protocols, and the ethical problems of compensating aura with spent energy; Unlock asks: Can a physical or unintended interaction manipulate an NFT? Can a generative manifesto be traded? Can the artist be trusted to control the artwork after it’s commodified? What risks are attached to a cultural asset that unexpectedly changes in context and conditions over time? With the kind support of Mondriaan Fund.

Dust photo2 by Ren Xingxing

Tianzhuo Chen

Instruments of ritual echo through a deserted Tibetan landscape, while Buddhist chants wash over water-powered prayer wheels and the wreckages of industrial machinery. In The Dust, Tianzhuo Chen reveals a world in disorder where objects and ceremonial instruments are linked by absurd logics of chaos and creation. Inspired by the funeral ritual of the sky burial, where the deceased is left in the open air to decompose and be scavenged by vultures, the installation maps the passage from death to rebirth in a world without humans. Beginning with water and mud and ending in the sky, blown about by mountain winds, Tianzhuo weaves together Buddhist cosmology, corporate visual language, and nightlife hedonism to question the fragility and absurdity of contemporary life and its systems of belief.

Starting with what seems to be a trivial security check procedure at the entrance to the Tel Aviv airport, By The Throat explores the deeply engraved border that marks our oral cavity and defines the sounds and words we can pronounce. We carry within us these limits, created by our mother tongue, becoming ourselves a mobile checkpoint, wherever we are. Combining filmed testimonies, found footage, YouTube clips, and medical imagery, the film moves through sonic, anatomical and political territories, and explores how language and pronunciation are used to define, categorise and control, questioning our desire for identification and categorisation. Montreal Life Support & Woulg — official artist page, MUTEK Tokyo 2022

Montreal Life Support & Woulg

Empty Vessels is an immersive audio visual installation and performance piece. The project takes the form of three full sized cellos, locked in the metallic appendages of three bespoke robotic structures designed to support and autonomously play the cellos. Conceptually the piece is centered around an exploration of the question: is it important to have a “human touch” in art creation and performance, and why? This question unravels into several components: the parallels in human/AI learning, questions of authorship/copyright, automation and work availability/income, and modalities of expressive storytelling. Aesthetically the piece conveys the feeling that the cellos are being kept alive by the machines, like an organism on life support, or a baby in an incubator. This is mirrored abstractly in the visuals and the audio through contrast in warm, fragile, fleshy, human colors, tones and harmonies with discordant, precise, metallic and brutal ones. Oscillating slowly back and forth between the two before coming to a final high contrast section and then settling into agreement or stasis. *Supported by the SAT, Canada Council for the Arts, CALQ and remic microphones.

Nao Tokui

Through this AI DJ project, we have been exploring the future of DJ performance with AI. At first, we tried to make an AI-based music selection system as an AI DJ. In the second iteration, we utilized a few AI models on stage to generate real-time symbolic music(i.e., MIDI). In the performance, A human DJ (Tokui) controlled various parameters of the generative AI models and drum machines. This time, we aim to advance one step further and deploy AI models to generate audio on stage in near real-time. Everything you hear during the performance will be pure AI-generation (no synthesizer, no drum machine). In this performance, Emergent Rhythm, the human DJ will become an AJ or "AI Jocky" instead of a Disk Jocky, and he is expected to tame and ride the AI-generated audio stream in real-time. The distinctive characteristics of AI-based audio generation and "morphing" will provide a unique and even otherworldly sonic experience for the audience.

Déliquescence cosmique is a work in progress at the crossroads of physical science and choreography of materials and energy that obey universal laws. In this piece, a magnetic fluid is trapped in a frame, as a reflection, where a shadow is manipulated to act as an exercise in shaping the representation of the self and the human, between mutation, attraction, and fusion in its cosmological reflection. The research consists in developing the physicality of matter to use it as a visual choreographic element and by converting magnetic variations into sound. All bodies attract each other whether they are terrestrial or celestial. Gravitation is not a real force but rather a phenomenon caused by a deformation of space and time by the masses. Déliquescence cosmique raises the question of our relationship to post-humanism and the anthropocentric approach we have with space-time.

Struere is a relational structure formed through a performative act of stacking, composing, and organizing the basic geometric forms of point, line, and plane. Points, lines, and planes are conceptual units for perceiving space and form; although they do not possess physical substance, within virtual space they are materialized through computation and revealed as operational realities of point, line, and plane—vertex, edge, and face. Struere arranges, combines, and connects these elements, generating flows and balancing relationships to form structures and produce spatial events. As architecture in the physical world forms structure and composes space, in digital space the relationships among points, lines, and planes form structure and compose space. While physical architecture, grounded in the laws of matter, entails hierarchies among structural elements, in the digital environment points, lines, and planes are treated as equal computational entities, dissolving hierarchy within structure and space. As the coordinates of these simultaneously computed elements continuously shift, the structure of Struere expands into a variable state of structural–spatial configuration. The structure of Struere appears on the screen of an actual architectural surface, creating a point of intersection where the architectural structure that forms physical space and the digital structure–space cross. Through their juxtaposition, the difference in order between physical and digital structures is revealed, exploring new structural sensibilities generated in digital space.

Saeko Ehara & Shuta Yasukochi — official artist page, MUTEK Tokyo 2025

Saeko Ehara & Shuta Yasukochi

Daily Scape is a work born from the combination of the series Daily Narratives and Collectible Scape. While Daily Narratives focuses on the theme of “observations and conversations in daily life,” Collectible Scape explores the “documentation and preservation of vanishing landscapes.” By intersecting these two perspectives, the work attempts to visualize the flow of time hidden in everyday life, layers of memory, and the cycle of creation and disappearance. In Daily Narratives, fragments of daily life are captured on a smartphone, then re-generated using ComfyUI (an AI tool for node-based manipulation of Stable Diffusion), and further transformed into generative animations through TouchDesigner (a node-based visual coding software). The landscapes reshaped by AI are both reflections of my own life and forms that merge into someone else’s memories. This work, which emerged through dialogue with ChatGPT, presents a new kind of conversation between humans and AI, between the individual and others. Meanwhile, Collectible Scape is a series that digitally reconstructs everyday landscapes and artifacts that are disappearing. Playgrounds, wells, public telephones, incinerators, and roadside flowers—objects often overlooked—are preserved as data and given new life through TouchDesigner. Inspired by the Zen concept of hika-rakuyo (falling petals and leaves), the series depicts how both living and inanimate things inevitably undergo change and disappearance. Daily Scape is an exploration of “another landscape” that emerges between observation, documentation, and regeneration in a constantly changing everyday life. It embodies the potential of art as a digital recording device that re-generates memory, connecting past, present, and future.

“+1+1+1+” is a dance installation by Daito Manabe and ELEVENPLAY, led by MIKIKO. Exploring the themes of time and structure, the work layers classical musical structures and repetitive contemporary rhythms with dancers’ bodies, moving images, light, and shifting frames. Through a stage space that repeatedly moves between synchronization and displacement, the work reconfigures the boundaries between body and technology, and between music and dance. The work had its world premiere in 2024 as part of the opening program for the Middle Hall at Toyama Aubade Hall, followed by performances in Hong Kong (2024) and Shanghai (2025). Launched in 2022, K/Hi carries the character of science art, attempting to visualize the laws and phenomena latent in the natural world, and works to bring phenomena themselves into being through the precise synchronization of sound and image. The project has explored the relationship between space and perception through a range of devices, including deformable displays and lasers. This iteration presents an audiovisual performance built around stereoscopic vision. Feeling Is Structure is an exploration of the hidden dialogue between physical form and human emotion. Across ten spatial audio-visual works, Max Cooper investigates how structure in sound, architecture, biology and art quietly shapes the way we feel. At its core, the album rests on a single conviction: that our inner emotional lives are inseparable from the environments we inhabit. Conceived alongside his live show, the project grew from Cooper's fascination with form as a vessel for feeling: "I'm fascinated by architects who can imbue brutalist buildings with humanity, or artists who can paint a block of colour representing their soul. We have this remarkable capacity to spill ourselves into the world through form. When I began working on this show, that connection between large-scale physical structures and feeling took over, and this album emerged from that process." Musically, Feeling Is Structure draws on the most intricate and deliberate side of Cooper's craft. Eschewing improvisation, the record is built from carefully designed systems and generative processes: evolving sonic architectures that are precise at the micro level, yet profoundly emotive in their impact. The result is music that mirrors its own thesis, treating structure not as constraint but as the very shape of feeling.

Música Aperta is an electroacoustic piece and audiovisual immersive performance that explores the perception of time through sound. Combining string drones, bowls, and organ, it creates a space of stillness and contemplation, resisting the fast pace of contemporary life. The project explores the concept of unfinished music, offering an interactive online version where listeners can mix tracks and create their own renditions through a reactive audiovisual interface. In its audiovisual format, "Música Aperta" reinterprets visual works from the early 20th century, drawing inspiration from the abstraction found in the early films of German artist Oskar Fischinger (1927) — light conceived as sound. Fischinger was one of the pioneers of the concept of 'visual music': non-figurative geometric forms synchronised with musical structures, painting that becomes movement. This abstraction dialogues with archive material from early microscopic films by British naturalist and filmmaker Percy Smith (1900), creating a poetic and minimalist world of light and organic forms that slowly transform. The work invites the audience to immerse themselves in a contemplative audiovisual experience.

H U M I is an immersive audiovisual performance exploring the border as a mutable threshold rather than a line of separation — a porous field where territories merge into geographies in continual metamorphosis. A fractured horizon in motion erodes territorial rigidity, opening unstable zones where forms overlap and lose their identities. High-definition samples from remote regions of the Earth are processed through AI, blending deterministic trajectories with stochastic behavior. Landscapes are not represented but regenerated: arid surfaces liquefy, coastlines fracture and overlap, urban textures dissolve into pulsating matter — producing a continuous cartographic mutation, an imaginary geography suspended between memory and possibility. Fragments of non-existent dialects and synthetic idioms, built from phonetic residues and field recordings, are quantized and resynthesized until only a faint echo of their origin survives, transformed into pure sound. These sound objects intertwine with sculpted electronic textures, while a quadraphonic composition responds to the images in real time, enveloping the audience in a synesthetic experience. The work unfolds as a single continuous movement — from particulate constellations condensing into recognizable forms, through liquid metamorphoses and shifts, into a unified configuration. What emerges is a shared aesthetic territory where cultural and spatial differences dissolve into transitory harmony. In H U M I, borders and identities don't delimit — they open a space of relationship where geography is mutable and language is the echo of a place that never existed.

"nD" is a diptych audiovisual performance piece and the third iteration of "cm:av_c," a project developed over many years. In this work, the phenomena of sound and vision, the modes of abstraction and concreteness, and the qualities of meaningfulness and meaninglessness are embodied in a continuous fluctuation between duality and non-duality. The diptych is not arranged simply to present opposition or difference, but as a site where perception oscillates between separation and inseparability. By treating and fusing sound and image at an abstract level, the piece creates an intense audiovisual experience that stimulates sight and hearing simultaneously. This pure audiovisual expression, stripped of meaning, liberates the audience from the constraints of interpretation and guides them toward a more direct, sensory experience. The "cm:av_c" project has been a long-standing pursuit since the early stages of Kurokawa's career and strongly reflects his unique and iconic artistic language. The first version premiered in 2005 and has since been presented worldwide, including at Tate Modern (UK), Ars Electronica (AT), and MUTEK (CA). The second version, "syn_ [ cm:av_c 2 ]," was released in 2011 and performed in over 20 countries in the following years. "nD [ cm:av_c 3 ]" represents the latest evolution of the project.

tamanaramen — official artist page, MUTEK Tokyo 2026

tamanaramen

This work is an audiovisual performance exploring dance, breath, and the memory of the ever-changing body. As expressed in the Japanese concept of “banbutsu ruten” — the idea that all things are in constant flux — everything continues to transform over time. Emotions, memories, bodies, and the landscapes surrounding us continuously shift and reshape themselves. I am deeply drawn to the ambiguous boundary between what disappears and what remains, between what changes and what continues to live on within the body. In this work, the body is perceived as a temporary vessel for memory and emotion. Feelings and memories constantly transform, yet through breathing, feeling pain, and moving our bodies in response to sound, we continue to recognize ourselves as existing beings. Over time, wrinkles and sagging slowly appear on the skin, and the body that once continued breathing will eventually stop functioning and grow cold. Still, it is only through this unstable and ever-changing body that we are able to experience and perceive the world. The visual work draws from the physicality of plants that bloom, decay, and wither, as well as organic imagery that continuously mutates like liquid. Skin, flower petals, water surfaces, waves, and flickering light — these elements oscillate between beauty and unease, dissolving the boundaries between them. Within these images exists a primitive longing for a sensation resembling the memory of floating in amniotic fluid before birth. The work also incorporates fragmented footage recorded while moving across Europe, layering together landscapes of transforming cities, bodies, and memories. Through sound that traverses ambient, IDM, and techno, alongside fluid visual expressions and repetitive rhythms of dance and movement, the performance attempts to disrupt the audience’s perception of time and bodily awareness, creating moments where personal memory dissolves into collective ecstasy. This work is conceived as an audiovisual ritual for bodies that continue breathing within an endlessly changing world.

Sara Persico & Mika Oki

In the audio-visual interpretation of Sphaîra , Sara Persico and Mika Oki invite audiences into an ambient universe where the boundaries between external stimuli and internal perception blur. Inspired by the vaporous acoustic qualities of the Experimental Theatre dome in Tripoli, the performance folds fractal imagery, breathy drones, and abstract stroboscopic effects into a hazy, mesmerizing, and profoundly introspective dance. TW: This performance uses smoke and strobe lights.

Super Galaxy Meow Meow

What sound would a laser make if it could speak? In Reciprocity , Super Galaxy Meow Meow flip the traditional audio-drives-visuals script, creating an interface between laser-generated sound and image. Light becomes an instrument for listening; sound influences light in response, and audience and artist are immersed in an unrepeatable, real-time dialogue where neither medium strictly illustrates the other. TW: This performance uses smoke, flashing lights, lasers, and intense lighting.
